Lot 863
1835 $2.50 Classic Head. NGC graded MS-63. Lovely, greenish gold with considerable reflective, prooflike tendencies. The devices are lightly frosted, creating an attractive cameo contrast. Somewhat weak at the centers on both sides. A very scarce die variety that uses the same reverse used to strike Proof Quarter Eagles of this year (close AM and broken M in AMERICA)! This may, in fact, be a poorly produced Proof. In circulation strike format, NGC has graded only 11 at this level, with 4 higher (all MS-64).
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1836 $2.50 Classic Head. NGC graded AU-55. Rich, deep, coppery toning covers both sides. Nicely struck and fully detailed except on the very highest points, where a touch of wear has changed the color only slightly. A very acceptable example of this short-lived type.
Estimated Value $550 - 650.

1836 $2.50 Classic Head. Script 8. Population of 25, only 1 higher by a point. PCGS graded MS-64. A typical strike for this year, strong about the borders and stars with some softness in the centers on both sides. Intense frosty mint luster adds to its appeal and all is lightly toned. We note several interesting die cracks on the obverse. A wonderful high grade example for the date and the Classic Head design type.

Lot 869
1850-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Pale, green-gold luster. Noted specialist Doug Winters said of this date, "Specimens which grade About Uncirculated are extremely rare." Only 9,148 examples were struck, so collectors can't be too picky about the grade, but its always refreshing to locate a nice, high grade piece such as this. On this variety, the mintmark is jammed so tightly against the bottom of the eagle that it looks like an "O."
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,700.

1875 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64. Ex Byron Reed. A popular key date in a series already replete with low mintages. This date started out with 400 circulation strikes and a mere 20 Proofs. In their 13 years of grading, PCGS has certified 8 Proofs (some of which may be resubmissions). Of those, 3 appear at the Proof-64 level (including this one) and only 3 have been graded higher (all PR-65). Being in an old style, green label holder, this one has a good shot at earning a Cameo designation. This near-Gem example features glittering, orange-yellow toning on both sides. From the famous Byron Reed collection. Identifying marks: small lintmark near the rim opposite the tip of the bust; tiny lintmark between the 1srt and 2nd stars; tiny lintmark near the rim between the 3rd and 4th stars; tiny lintmark above the 2 of the fraction (PCGS # 7901) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 20,000.

1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Stunning, pale orange colors and an absolutely incredible strike. The color and surfaces are reminiscent of a matte or satin finish proof, as the fields display the same sort of sandblast texture and flat, even color. A fabulous example of this key date, the only real rarity in the series. A great coin for the quality-conscious buyer. For all practical purposes only a single die pairing was used according the Breen (the second die pairing struck just 70 coins). Only 55,860 struck, making this the key date to the series, and one of the few gold date sets of anything most collectors could ever hope to complete.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 20,000.
